They are REALLY BIG one piece wood salad bowls! At 17" and 20" across, these are some of the largest one piece wooden bowls we carry.
How is the bowl made? There is a woodworking shop where, using machines over a 100 years old, craftspeople cut these historic wooden bowls from massive blocks of hardwoods. Gnarled hands load the blocks onto the spinning lathes and guide the specially shaped knives so that bowl after bowl in ever increasing sizes is wrested from the heart of the tree. For many years we have been proud to retail bowls such as these in our stores and now we are offering them on our website. Because they come straight from the tree they have all the individuality so often sawn out or selected out. The darker wood you see in a bowl is the old heartwood and the lighter is the sapwood which is to the outside of the tree. If you are looking for a plastic uniformity, don't bother with these bowls. These wooden bowls are nature in true display. After the bowls are cut to shape they are very carefully dried, then sanded smooth, and finished with a bees oil. The bowls are not truly round but become somewhat elliptical as they dry.
Our customers are always asking, what do you have for wooden salad servers? We offer Salad Servers and Salad Hands, either of which can add a stylish complement to your bowl choice.
